A tender for the construction of a major airport in the city of Natal
( northeast region ) will soon be issued.
To be located 11 kilometres from the city of Natal (state Rio Grande do Norte - Northeast Region) the Sao Goncalo International Airport, or Grande Natal International Airport is one the most ambitious projects designed by the Brazilian Government for the 2014 Football World Cup.
The airport is intended to be the biggest in Latin America and the
7th largest in the world with regards to capacity.
Besides the passenger and cargo terminals, it will also feature
hotels and a theme park.
The approximate value for the first part of the project is already
estimated in R$ 800,000,000.00 (£300,000,000.00).
The airport should be able to receive around 5 million passengers
per year and 10 A380 airships upon the completion of the first phase,
plus over 40 million passengers and up to 156 A380 airships later
on.
The bid winner will be in charge of the construction process until 2013, the deadline for the project.
Moreover, the winning company will be able to operate the airport for a period of 28 years.
The airport is designed to turn the city of Natal into an international cargo and passenger hub, as well as to expand the tourist and export sectors.
